Acai Palm Tree: Euterpe Oleracea
But Native Brazilians Call It “The Tree Of Life”
Place of growth: Brazil
You may know it as: Assai palm, acai palm
So What Exactly This Tree Of Life Is???
The Brazilian Açaí palm tree is very ornamental, with multiple branches which can reach up to 25 meters (80 feet) in height. This magnificent Tree Of Life is cultivated in the States of Pará, Amazonas, Maranhão and Amapá, especially in the Amazon River estuary. It lives in seasonally flooded habitats and along water margins.
The proliferation of the tree is extraordinary, especially considering its intensive extraction for the delicious heart-of-palm. It flowers throughout the year and the harvesting season is usually from July to December. The fruit is born in bunches of 3 to 8 and is highly valued by the Amazonense for use in wine or as a juice, and it is an important and popular dietary complement. The juice is extracted from the small round fruit which is purple in color.
The heart of palm is also very much appreciated and extensively farmed and extracted. The seeds are soaked in water to soften the thin outer shell. The seeds are then squeezed and strained to produce a dense purple liquid of incomparable flavor.
This liquid is served ice cold with sugar and tapioca flour. Some people like it without sugar. It is a nourishing and refreshing treat that is also used to produce ice cream, liquor, mousses and sweets in general.
Acai History: The Legend Behind The Fruit
It has been already centuries that Acai has been traditional food for many Brazilians. And like any other part of the Amazon’s folklore, even Acai has it’s own story. So here we go.
It has been said there was a rapidly growing village at the banks of the Pará river. Because of heavy population, people started to have lack of food. So the chief of this Amazon Indian tribe, called Itaki was forced to order that people could not have any children and every newborn child must be sacrificed.
At that time, Itaki’s daughter Iaca, a very beautiful girl was pregnant and after she heard her father new law, she run and pray to their God – Tupá, hoping everything is going to be alright.
All for nothing. Iaca gave birth to a beautiful girl, but as soon as the child was born… you know it already. Yes, the baby was killed.
Iaca mourned so much, maybe even getting a bit crazy. One night she heard her baby crying in the forest, so she ran – following baby voice. In couple of minutes, she saw her baby-girl lying down at the side of a slender palm tree, covered by fruit.
As soon as she tried to grab her, the image disappeared. Iaca sob so much, that she wasted all her energy and her body could not support her anymore. Iaca died that night.
The next day, Itaki could not find his daughter anywhere. He ordered to find her. When they finally discovered her body, she had a beautiful smile at her lips, covered in dark-purple fruit.
Itaki ordered to embrace this tree and fruit. They start eating this fruit and obtaining juice from it. All people in the tribe started to have more energy and they were not hungry anymore. That’s why Itaki decided to name the tree and fruit Acai, which is Iaca spelled backwards.
With abundance of this fruit, the tribe flourished and Itaki terminated his order of sacrifice.Today is this population known as Belém in the Brazilian state of Pará.

For example, an analysis of oxygen radical absorbency capacity (ORAC) of a freeze-dried Acai powder shows an incredibly high antioxidant effect that is not entirely explained.
- Fatty Acids. Acai berries are especially rich in the fatty acids, oleic acid (Omega 9), palmitic acid and linoleic acid (Omega 6), the “good” fatty acids. The ratio of fatty acids in Acai resembles that of olive oil. Nearly 1/3 of the berry is fat.
